Sustainable Eating and Living



There are 963 million undernourished people in the world today. That means one in nearly seven people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. Hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to the health worldwide — greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
Among the key causes of hunger are natural disasters, conflict, poverty, poor agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of the environment.
As well as the obvious sort of hunger resulting from an empty stomach, there is also the hidden hunger of micronutrient deficiencies which make people susceptible to infectious diseases, impair physical and mental development, reduce their labour productivity and increase the risk of premature death.
The recent drops in global food production and increasing food demand coupled with economic recession have worsened the global food crisis. UN statistic shows that 100 million people are on the verge of starvation. However Singapore being a developed country enjoys easy access to all types of food items.
Singapore wasted 507,700 tons of food in 2007, and only 9% of it is recycled. This shows that Singaporean waste a lot of food both in the consumption and in the production. The current attitude of Singaporeans towards sustainable consumption of food makes this project all the more relevant to Singapore. Imagine how much food is wasted across countries, across continents and in the whole world !
Responding to this situation, AIESEC in NTU is initiating this Sustainable Eating and Living project. The aim of this project is to increase the awareness about the global food crisis among the Singaporean and educate them as to how they can consume food more sustainably. And departing from this initial aim, the project is expected to grow and target not only the consumer but also the food producer.
AIESEC in NTU is proud to be the first to take the initiative in dealing with this issue. The same goes with you, as the first people & organizations who endorse this initiative in Singapore.

Sustainable Eating and Living in NTU



Sustainable Food Consumption was launched in AIESEC in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in August 2008. This project had been renamed as Sustainable Eating and Living. The events that we had worked on last year were:
Awareness Campaign held on the World Food Day
Venue: Nanyang Technological University
Date: 16 October 2008 to 18 October 2008

The awareness campaign was held on the same day as World Food Day on 16 October 2008, in the form of an exhibition. This event was aimed to spread the awareness of global food crisis among NTU population. There was positive feedback from the students. We were able to reach out to over 200 youths and teachers.

Hunger Banquet and Sustainability Forum

The Hunger Banquet was based on the concept of Oxfam Hunger Banquet. Many participants pledged to consume food more sustainably by becoming vegetarian once a week and reducing food wastage.
